Liposuction is a popular cosmetic procedure that helps eliminate stubborn fat deposits that are resistant to diet and exercise. However, many prospective patients are concerned about safety and the risks involved.

In this blog post, I’ll address the questions I’m frequently asked about liposuction—from pain levels to risks and recovery.

1.    What Are the Risks and Side Effects?

Liposuction carries some risks, as with any surgical procedure, but complications are rare when performed by an experienced,board-certified plastic surgeon. Common side effects include swelling, bruising, and minor scarring.

While more serious risks such as infection, blood clots, and asymmetry can occur, they are infrequent and typically preventable with proper preoperative and postoperative care.

2.    Does Liposuction Leave Scars?

Liposuction scars are minimal. The incisions are tiny, and I take great care to place them in natural creases or less visible areas. Over time, these scars fade and become almost imperceptible. My meticulous approach to incision placement and closure helps ensure that liposuction scars are as inconspicuous as possible.

3.    Is Liposuction Painful?

One of the primary concerns for anyone considering liposuction is the pain involved. To keep you comfortable throughout your procedure, I perform liposuction with general or local anesthesia.

Post-surgery, patients typically experience mild to moderate discomfort, which peaks within the first 24 to 48 hours. Pain is usually managed with prescription medication for a few days, after which most patients report a rapid decrease in discomfort. Most people rate their liposuction pain on a scale from mild to moderate.

4.    Is Liposuction Safe for Seniors?

Age alone is not a limiting factor for liposuction. Instead, overall health and medical history are more important considerations. Seniors in good health who maintain a stable weight and have good skin elasticity can safely undergo liposuction.

During your consultation, I’ll carefully assess your medical history and physical condition to see if you are a good candidate for the procedure.

5.    How Do I Prepare for Liposuction?

Preparation is vital to ensuring a safe and successful liposuction experience. Here are some steps to take before your procedure:

  • Medical Evaluation: Undergo a comprehensive medical evaluation to ensure you are fit for surgery.
  • Medications: Avoid certain medications and supplements that can increase bleeding risk.
  • Healthy Lifestyle: Maintain a healthy diet and regular exercise routine to optimize your body’s readiness for surgery and recovery.
  • Quit Smoking: If you smoke, quit several weeks before and after the procedure to promote better healing.

6.    What Can I Expect During Recovery?

Recovery from liposuction is typically straightforward. Here’s a general timeline of what you can expect:

  • First Few Days: Mild to moderate discomfort, managed with pain medication. Swelling and bruising are common.
  • 1 to 2 Weeks: Resume daily activities and non-strenuous work. Swelling and bruising begin to subside.
  • 3+ Weeks: Continue wearing compression garments as directed to minimize swelling and support healing.
  • 6 Weeks & Beyond: Gradually return to strenuous activities and exercise, as cleared by me.

Following these guidelines helps ensure a smooth recovery and optimal results. Learn more about liposuction recovery in my related blog post.
