Sometimes, dieting and exercise alone can’t accomplish your aesthetic goals. That’s why liposuction is such a popular body contouring procedure. If you’re interested in learning more about liposuction and what to expect on your aesthetic journey, we answer common questions about liposuction recovery below.

How Long Does It Take To Heal From Liposuction?

Liposuction recovery time is generally 1 to 2 weeks, depending on the extent of your treatment area. Most patients are able to return to work and resume their regular activities after this time. However, strenuous activity should be avoided for at least 4 to 6 weeks. Swelling and bruising can take up to 6 weeks to fully subside.

Wondering What To Expect 3 Weeks After Liposuction?

Although you will have turned the corner in your recovery and be back to your normal routines, week 3 is still an important milestone in your healing journey. This is when you can begin seeing your initial results! Signs of swelling and bruising will still be present but fading, allowing you to see the difference in your body. Your results will continue to develop and improve over time.

During the first few weeks after your procedure, it is important to wear your compression garment(s) to minimize swelling and prevent lumps from forming and compromising your aesthetic outcomes.

Can I Do Anything Before My Procedure To Help With Recovery?

Like any surgical procedure, it is best to head into liposuction in good overall health. This includes being well-rested, hydrated, and within your ideal weight range (give or take 10 to 15 pounds). We advise you to stop taking aspirin and certain anti-inflammatory drugs before surgery to avoid bleeding complications. You should also stop smoking and limit alcohol in the weeks leading up to your procedure.

Is Liposuction Painful?

During your procedure, we will administer local anesthesia for your comfort. Many patients experience soreness rather than pain after surgery. We provide antibiotics and pain medications to prevent infection and help you manage any discomfort during your recovery.

Will I Have Scars From Liposuction?

Liposuction uses small, minimally invasive incisions. We make every effort to skillfully hide scars in body creases for as discreet and sensitive a result as possible. Most scars fade and are barely visible over time.

When Will I See My Liposuction Results?

You should notice a sleeker physique almost immediately following your procedure! However, results will be much more noticeable at around 3 to 6 weeks as swelling gradually reduces. Keep in mind that it may take up to 6 months for the swelling to subside fully. However, during this time, you will continue to heal and enjoy your initial results.

Can I Combine Liposuction With Other Procedures?

Yes! We often recommend combining liposuction with procedures such as a tummy tuck or body lift to help patients achieve optimal results. For example, a tummy tuck can further tighten the skin after removing excess fat. Please keep in mind that your recovery window may be longer if you combine liposuction with one of these procedures.

What Should I Avoid After Liposuction?

If you are wondering what to avoid after liposuction, we recommend that you limit sun and heat exposure for several weeks, as this can lead to the possibility of increased swelling and scarring. Staying active and avoiding weight gain can help you preserve your liposuction results indefinitely—however, if you overdo it, you risk opening sutures and hampering your progress. We will provide you with detailed post-operative instructions to ensure a safe, smooth healing process.
