Answering Your Most-Asked Breast Augmentation Questions: Cost, Pain, and More

A patient asks questions about what to expect with breast augmentation surgery.

Breast augmentation is consistently one of the most popular procedures in America. It is an effective way to add feminine volume to the breasts and boost confidence in the patient. But despite this popularity, many misunderstandings and questions remain about what the procedure entails.

In this blog post, I will answer a few commonly asked questions I receive from breast augmentation patients from Brooklyn, Staten Island, and beyond.

What is the difference between breast augmentation and breast implants?

While most people are familiar with breast implants, some may have never heard the term “breast augmentation.” Simply put, breast implants are specialized devices filled with saline or silicone placed under the breast tissue to add volume. Breast augmentation is the name of the procedure that puts the implants in place or otherwise adds volume to the breasts. If you are interested in receiving breast implants, then you will need breast augmentation surgery.

Can breast augmentation fix uneven breasts?

Yes, breast augmentation with implants can easily correct uneven breasts. Depending on the severity of your asymmetry or your desired results, you may need a breast implant placed in one or both of your breasts. We carefully customize each procedure to meet the needs of your body. If your asymmetry is severe, we may recommend breast augmentation on your smaller breast and breast reduction on the larger one.

Is breast augmentation painful?

Like any surgery, breast augmentation involves a certain amount of discomfort. Your body needs to adapt to the presence of breast implants underneath your muscles and tissues. Rather than actual pain, you’re more likely to feel temporary tightness or cramping along your chest, shoulders, neck, and back. This can be easily managed with pain medications prescribed by your doctor. These side effects will subside after a few days.

How much does breast augmentation cost?

In the Brooklyn and Long Island area, the price of breast augmentation with implants depends on many different factors. The type of implants, the experience of the surgeon, and operating room fees can all impact the final price. During your one-on-one consultation at our practice, we will analyze your body, discuss your goals, and give you a customized quote for your procedure. We also offer financing options for those who qualify.

Is there a best age for breast augmentation?

There is no single “best age” for receiving breast implants. The FDA has approved the use of saline-filled implants for women 18 years and older, while silicone gel can be used by those 22 and older. Likewise, there is no strict “maximum age” for breast augmentation, and even healthy women in their 80s have enjoyed the results of the procedure. As long as you’re in overall good health and have decent skin elasticity, you should be a candidate for surgery.

How long is breast augmentation recovery?

Most patients need to only take 5 days off from work after their breast augmentation. To minimize swelling and provide support to your breasts, you will need to wear a special elastic bandage for the first 4 days.

As the swelling begins to subside, you can move over to wearing a sports bra for the next 3 weeks. After 1 month you can often return to more vigorous activities and enjoy your final results. Learn how to maximize your new look in our related blog post.
