Fat beneath the chin can be difficult to treat: You can’t exactly exercise it away, and diet alone may not be enough to slim it down—especially if you have a genetic predisposition to store fat under your chin. Fortunately, you have options for enhancing your profile and eliminating that double chin. I frequently use liposuction for patients whose submental fullness is masking their jawline and softening the contours of their neck. This “chin lipo” treatment is safe, effective, and long-lasting. Find out if it’s right for you below.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Liposuction Under the Chin?

Double chin liposuction is an excellent option if you have stubborn submental fat caused by genetics or weight fluctuations. Your weight should be stable at or near your ideal size, and you should have good skin elasticity and generally good health. Chin lipo is a great choice if you’re looking to:

  • Enhance the natural contours of your jawline and neck
  • Target fat that may not respond to other weight loss methods
  • Return to your daily life quicker after surgery
  • Permanently remove fat beneath the chin

Depending on your aesthetic goals, I may recommend combining chin liposuction with complementary procedures like my Rejuvelift™ facelift or FaceTite skin tightening for the most comprehensive results.

What Happens During Double Chin Lipo?

Like traditional liposuction for body contouring, chin liposuction uses a small cannula to suction excess fat. I first inject the area with a tumescent solution, which acts as a local anesthetic and causes the fat to become firmer and easier to remove.

I then make a discreet incision under the chin and insert the cannula. I carefully dislodge the fat deposits using this thin tube and vacuum them away for a more sculpted, defined appearance.

What To Expect During Chin Lipo Recovery

The recovery process for chin liposuction is typically straightforward and shorter than for procedures targeting larger areas. Here’s an overview of what you can expect:

  • First Few Days: Swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort are normal in the initial days. Most people describe the discomfort as manageable and find that over-the-counter pain relief is sufficient for their needs.
  • Compression Garment: We recommend wearing a compression garment for the first 1 to 2 weeks to minimize swelling and support the healing tissues. This garment also helps the skin conform smoothly to the new contours.
  • Resuming Activities: Many people return to work and light activities within 3 to 7 days. However, you should abstain from strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for about 2 to 3 weeks.

What About Scarring?

Chin liposuction involves a tiny incision in the crease under the chin, making it virtually undetectable. With proper aftercare, including keeping the area clean, moisturizing, and avoiding sun exposure, your chin liposuction scar will fade significantly and become barely noticeable over time.

When Will You See Results?

While some improvement is visible as swelling subsides during the first few weeks, your results typically take 1 to 3 months to finalize. This allows time for the body to heal fully and the skin to adjust to the new contours of the chin and neck.

How Does Chin Lipo Compare to a Neck Lift?

Chin liposuction and neck lift surgery both significantly improve your appearance, but they address different concerns and are suitable for different candidates. A lower facelift with a neck lift may be a more suitable option for the following people:

  • Patients with significant skin laxity or sagging
  • Those looking to address loose skin and muscle bands in the neck
  • Individuals desiring more comprehensive neck rejuvenation
  • People with both excess fat and loose skin in the neck area

Ultimately, the choice between chin lipo and a neck lift depends on your specific needs, age, skin condition, and desired outcomes. Chin liposuction is generally less invasive, has a shorter recovery time, and focuses on fat removal, whereas a neck lift addresses skin laxity and provides more dramatic results for those with significant sagging. We’ll discuss your concerns and goals during your consultation, and after an examination of your facial structure and skin quality, I can recommend the procedure that best suits your needs.
