4 Tips for a Smooth Facelift Recovery

A woman laughs and is happy with her facelift results.

Facelift surgery helps women and men from Brooklyn, Staten Island, and beyond take years off their appearance. Since this procedure involves lifting and adjusting the delicate skin and tissues of the face, many people require a few weeks to heal. When you’re excited to see results, this wait can feel especially long.

The good news is that there are plenty of ways you can support your body during healing. With a healthy mindset and a bit of smart preparation, you can enjoy a smooth facelift recovery. Here are our 4 tips to help you make the most of your downtime.

#1. Prepare Your House

After a friend or loved one drives you home from surgery, you will spend your first days relaxing at home. To make the transition as easy as possible, set up your main space by organizing and sanitizing the room. Make sure all your prescriptions are in order, and consider prepping a few meals beforehand. You can also collect entertainment items—your favorite books, tablet, etc.—so they’re all in one convenient location.

#2. Monitor Your Health

You may have undergone surgery on just your face, but recovery involves the entire body. A healthy lifestyle gives your system the support it needs to speed up the healing process. Eat nutrient-dense foods, refrain from smoking or drinking, and take all your prescribed medication as directed.

Your face may feel numb or tight the first weeks after surgery, but remember—this is totally normal. If you experience more intense side effects, such as a fever or loose stitches, be sure to contact your doctor.

#3. Avoid Vigorous Activity

You may feel more tired than usual during recovery, as your body dedicates more energy to healing. Try gentle walks when you feel comfortable; the movement promotes healthy blood flow, which aids recovery.

Avoid strenuous activities, such as running or biking, for 4 to 6 weeks after surgery. Exercising too soon can put a strain on the body and be harmful to your final results.

#4. Get Plenty of Rest

After surgery, it’s easy to get excited and want to see your results right away. But remember: Recovery is a marathon, not a sprint. Improvements develop gradually over time as your body heals. Stay patient and be gentle with yourself.

Sleep plays an important role in physical healing and body repair, so aim for at least 8 hours of sleep each night. While sleeping, be sure to keep your head elevated to reduce swelling. Some people find it’s most comfortable to sleep in a recliner or propped up on pillows for a few days after surgery to keep the head elevated.

Don’t feel guilty for needing a bit of help or time off from chores and work while you’re healing. The more care and attention you give yourself during recovery, the better your results will be. Learn more about enhancing your facelift results in our related blog post.
