When it comes to breast augmentation for my Staten Island patients, the first step is usually a private consultation. During this time, you can ask me questions and learn more about what to expect from your plastic surgery procedure. However, before you even walk through my office door, you should consider a few other important issues.
Here are 5 questions you can ask yourself before breast augmentation to make sure you’re physically—and emotionally—ready for treatment.
Am I a good candidate for breast augmentation?
While women from all walks of life can benefit from breast implants, there are common characteristics among good candidates. Breast augmentation may work well if you:
- Are in good health overall
- Want to increase the size of your breasts
- Are at least 18 years old (for saline implants) or 22 years old (for silicone implants)
What are my goals for the procedure?
What type of look do you imagine when you think of your ideal body? Do you want implants to help you feel confident in tight-fitting tops? Do you have one breast that’s larger than the other and you want to correct asymmetry? Breast augmentation can create beautiful results you can enjoy for years to come, as shown by several of my own patients.
There are many reasons to be interested in breast augmentation. Before your consultation, you should consider your goals and motivations. Make sure that you have healthy, realistic expectations before heading into surgery. Choosing to undergo the procedure is a big choice, and this decision should be truly yours.
What should I bring to my consultation?
Along with your prepared list of questions, you may want to bring:
- Your favorite before-and-after cases or reference photos
- Easy-to-remove clothes
- Your schedule or calendar
- Personal health info
In most cases, you can bring along a trusted friend or family member for support.
Should I combine my augmentation with a lift?
Breast augmentation uses breast implants to increase the size and volume of the breasts. It cannot, however, lift a saggy breast or create a perkier appearance. This can only be achieved with breast lift surgery.
If you have saggy skin and excess tissue, you may want to combine your breast augmentation with a breast lift. When used together, these procedures create comprehensive results, making your breasts look fuller and more youthful.
What am I looking for in a plastic surgeon?
Just as no two patients are the same, each plastic surgeon is unique. Take a moment to think about the traits of your ideal surgeon. Some points include:
- Credentials: Find a surgeon who is board-certified and has extensive experience with breast augmentation.
- Approach: Does your surgeon have a certain artistic approach when it comes to implants? Do they create results that are more dramatic or more natural-looking?
- Personality: Your doctor will be with you every step of the way, so find someone who has a kind bedside manner and listens to your needs.
Am I comfortable with the possible risks?
Like any procedure, plastic surgery always comes with a certain amount of risk. The most common complications include infection, implant rupture, and capsular contracture. Research these issues online and learn how you can spot them as quickly as possible. The best way to reduce your risk of complications is to find a board-certified plastic surgeon to perform your procedure.
