Who Is a Good Candidate for Liposuction?

Liposuction may help if you:

  • Want to reduce fat in specific regions of your body, such as your back, arms, abdomen, waistline, hips, and thighs.
  • Regularly exercise, follow a healthy diet, and keep your weight stable.
  • Have good skin tone.
  • Have areas of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise.

BodyTite is a minimally invasive fat reduction and skin tightening treatment that can be used to enhance the same areas instead of or in addition to liposuction.

Your Liposuction Procedure

Always up-to-date on the latest technologies and techniques, Dr. Cutolo will discuss your options with you during your consultation – guiding you through the techniques that are “gimmicks” and those that are “tried and true” that will safely yield the most consistent and best results! He also will provide you with details on what to expect during the surgery.

To keep you comfortable throughout your procedure, Dr. Cutolo performs liposuction with general anesthesia or local anesthesia. After making a tiny incision, he inserts a narrow tube, known as a cannula, to sculpt and remove the fatty tissue in the treatment area. He then closes the incisions meticulously to minimize scarring, using a compression dressing or bandage to reduce swelling and provide support. The surgery usually lasts 30 minutes to several hours, depending on the extent of the procedure.

What Is the Fastest Way to Recover From Liposuction?

After your surgery, Dr. Cutolo typically recommends the following to minimize recovery time:

  • Take slow, gentle walks multiple times a day to increase your circulation and help with the healing process.
  • Keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
  • Take antibiotics as directed to prevent infection and prescription pain medication as needed to manage any discomfort.
  • Wear your support garments as directed to minimize swelling and promote smooth contours as you heal.
  • Avoid heavy lifting, straining, and bending over at the waist for the first 7 to 10 days.

What Is Recovery Like After Liposuction?

Liposuction is typically an outpatient procedure; you will return home the day of surgery in the care of a trusted adult. Treated areas will be sore as the local anesthetic wears off. Prescription medication helps patients ease discomfort that usually peaks over the first few days.

Liposuction Recovery Milestones

While patient experiences vary, most reach the following general recovery milestones along this timeline after liposuction:

  • Discomfort peaks: 2 to 4 days
  • Resume daily activities and non-strenuous work: 1 to 2 weeks
  • Swelling and bruising fade: 2 to 4 weeks
  • Wear compression garment: 3+ weeks as directed
  • Gradually return to strenuous activities and exercise: 6 weeks, as cleared by Dr. Cutolo
  • See final results: 4 to 6 weeks (with continued improvement for about 6 months)

Liposuction Results and Benefits

For both men and women, liposuction procedures can replace those frustrating saddle bags, love handles, and other bulges with beautiful new contours. Patients frequently tell Dr. Cutolo how delighted they feel with their slimmer shape and improved proportions.

Liposuction FAQ

How do I know if I need liposuction or a tummy tuck?

Both liposuction and tummy tucks are body contouring procedures that can improve abdominal contours. They have some key differences, including:

  • Liposuction is strictly for fat removal. It doesn’t tighten the skin and may increase laxity if the skin does not have enough elasticity to adapt to the new abdominal contours.
  • Tummy tuck surgery tightens lax abdominal skin and repairs stretched and separated abdominal muscles (diastasis recti). It also reshapes the belly button if necessary.

If you have been pregnant or lost significant weight, you could probably benefit from a combination of these procedures.

Are liposuction results permanent?

By maintaining your weight and staying on a healthy food and fitness plan, you can enjoy the benefits of liposuction indefinitely.

Is the surgery painful?

Before surgery, Dr. Cutolo infuses the targeted fat with a tumescent solution that contains a local anesthetic to control pain. Discomfort after liposuction, which typically peaks within 24 to 48 hours, ranges from mild to moderate depending on treatment areas and individual patient factors. Patients usually take prescription pain medication for the first few days.

Why do I need to wear a compression garment during recovery?

The compression garment places consistent pressure on treated areas, minimizing swelling and helping to smooth contours as you heal.

Does the surgery leave scars?

Every incision leaves a scar. The incisions made during liposuction are tiny and placed where the resulting scars will be inconspicuous, such as in natural creases.

Are there any risks?

Liposuction risks are rare when performed by an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon. The most common side effects include bleeding, infection, blood clots, skin laxity, lumpiness, and asymmetry.

How much weight will I lose with liposuction?

Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure, so don’t expect a big change on the scale. The good news is that you will likely look like you’ve lost weight because you will be free from fat where it matters most to you.
